GM's V8 Recall Shifts Again as Owners Seek Better Fixes

General Motors launched a massive recall in April 2025 affecting nearly 600,000 full-size trucks and SUVs equipped with the 6.2-liter L87 V8 engine. Federal regulators cited potential defects in connecting rods and crankshafts that could cause engine failure or fires while driving. The recall covers 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalades, Chevrolet Silverados and Suburbans, and GMC Sierra and Yukon models.

Initially, GM instructed dealers to replace factory 0W-20 oil with thicker 0W-40 dexosR-approved oil in engines that passed inspection but weren't replaced. This solution drew swift criticism from owners and consumer lawyers who argued that an oil change couldn't address underlying manufacturing defects in crankshaft and rod bearings. Multiple class action lawsuits remain active, alleging GM knew about the problems for years before recalling vehicles.

In February 2026, GM quietly shifted to Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 oil instead of the previously specified Supercar blend. While both meet GM's performance specifications, the FS variant is more widely available and likely more affordable. The change appears driven by logistics and cost rather than performance improvements. Owner frustration continues over limited dealer availability, long wait times, and uncertainty about whether replacement engines reliably solve the problems.
