Iran Expands Hormuz Waters Control

Iran has unilaterally expanded its definition of the Strait of Hormuz, signaling broader claims over the critical waterway. Mohammad Akbarzadeh, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps naval forces official, announced Tehran now considers the strait to encompass a much larger area than before the conflict.

The move comes after Iranian attacks effectively closed the strait to global shipping at the start of the war. The waterway handles about 20% of global oil consumption through its narrow passage, making any disruption potentially devastating for energy markets and supply chains.

Iran's expanded territorial claim raises tensions with international shipping operators who must now navigate uncertain boundaries. The Islamic Republic vows it will "not allow any kind of encroachment upon its waters and interests," potentially disrupting maritime commerce in the region.
