World Cup Final Halftime Show Set With Shakira, Madonna and BTS

FIFA announced Thursday that Shakira, Madonna, and BTS will headline the inaugural World Cup final halftime show on July 19 at MetLife Stadium. The lineup meshes Latin, pop, and Korean music to reflect soccer's global appeal. Coldplay's Chris Martin selected the artists, with Global Citizen producing the performance that could draw even casual viewers.

The 2022 World Cup final attracted over 500 million live viewers, establishing the event as a massive media property. Adding a halftime spectacle follows American sports entertainment traditions, where Super Bowl halftime shows regularly command 100 million-plus viewers. This commercial strategy aims to expand the World Cup's audience beyond traditional soccer fans while generating additional sponsorship and advertising revenue.

However, the entertainment addition risks alienating soccer purists who view halftime as sacrosanct. Professor Sean Jacobs notes that international fans don't need extra festivities to love football, suggesting cultural divides in sports entertainment preferences. The show's success may determine whether this becomes a permanent World Cup feature.

Shakira also released this month's official World Cup anthem, "Dai Dai," featuring Burna Boy, continuing her long-standing association with the tournament that began with the 2010 South Africa opening ceremony.
