San Diego County prosecutors charged Thomas C. Butler with murder on June 3 in the beating death of Kerry Sheron, a 69-year-old U.S. Army veteran whose Escondido home on East Mission Avenue had become a local political landmark for its Trump banners, flags and signs.

Sheron was attacked outside the house on May 20 and died four days later. Neighbors knew the property for its American flags, MAGA banners and patriotic displays, with Sheron often sitting outside waving to passing drivers. Family members said the couple had faced harassment and vandalism tied to the political displays.

Butler was initially charged with attempted murder on May 22; the charge was upgraded after Sheron's death. The assault occurred in broad daylight, though investigators said the motive remained unclear. Dozens gathered outside the home after his death, and a rally in Poway drew supporters for Sheron's family.

Maria Sheron and relatives mourned a man remembered as caring and kind. A community memorial page added a public layer to a private loss that played out at a house many already knew by sight.
