Michigan Senate Primary: Israel Issue Tests Pro-Israel Democrat

A new poll shows Haley Stevens faces skepticism from Michigan Democratic primary voters over her pro-Israel stance and AIPAC backing, though the issue ranks low in voter priorities. The Detroit News/WDIV-TV survey of 500 likely voters by Richard Czuba's Glengariff Group found 49% hold an unfavorable view of AIPAC, while only 12% view it favorably. Respondents rated a candidate's position on Israel and Gaza at just 5.6 on a 10-point importance scale.

Abdul El-Sayed has attacked Stevens over $49 million in outside spending, including $26 million from an AIPAC-aligned group. El-Sayed calls Israel's actions in Gaza a genocide and wants to end U.S. military aid to Israel. Stevens counters that "no one owns my vote" and criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for failing to secure peace and humanitarian aid.

Despite divisions over AIPAC, Michigan Democrats largely agree on core issues: 63% support a Palestinian state, 77% affirm Israel's right to exist, and 70% say Israel's military actions have "gone too far." Antisemitism concerns split by age, with 76% of voters 65+ saying it has increased. Undecided voters remain neutral on AIPAC, suggesting the issue may not decide the primary.
