Maine DSA Weighs Next Move After Platner Collapse

Maine Democrats announced a June 25 convention to replace Graham Platner after sexual assault allegations ended his Senate campaign against Susan Collins. The Maine chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) felt betrayed; though Platner wasn't a member, his platform aligned with their priorities. Wesley Pelletier, a Portland City Councilor and DSA member, said "we felt betrayed." The DSA had declined to formally endorse Platner due to concerns over controversial Reddit posts and a tattoo resembling Nazi iconography.

Howa Ikram, a longtime DSA member, described the allegations as "undeniably true." Platner denied the assault allegation by Jenny Racicot. Despite the collapse, Pelletier believes a progressive candidate could still defeat Collins: "If we have a campaign that picks up the pieces... Collins will be gone."

Seven candidates are vying for the nomination before a June 27 deadline. Top contenders include Troy Jackson, a DSA-endorsed working-class legislator; Nirav Shah, a moderate former health official; and Shenna Bellows, Maine's Secretary of State. The Maine DSA hasn't endorsed yet, though Pelletier backed Jackson individually. Progressives hope national Democrats like Chuck Schumer stay out, citing Maine's unique resistance to establishment influence.
