Justice Department Indicts Shipowner Over Baltimore Bridge Crash

Federal prosecutors filed an 18‑count indictment Tuesday against the owner and operator of the cargo vessel that struck Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge in 2024. The charges, ranging from obstruction to misconduct resulting in death, target Synergy Marine, the firm behind the ship named Dali. The crash killed six bridge workers and halted traffic at one of the nation’s busiest ports.

The legal action follows a civil lawsuit in which the Justice Department secured a settlement of roughly $102 million from Synergy. Investigators allege the company concealed critical safety information and conspired to defraud the government. Synergy’s spokesperson, Darrell Wilson, pledged a vigorous defense, underscoring the firm’s intent to fight the accusations in court.

Investors watch closely as the case could reshape liability exposure for maritime operators and affect insurance premiums across the shipping sector. With the Port of Baltimore remaining a key gateway for U.S. trade, any prolonged litigation threatens cargo flows and could prompt tighter regulatory scrutiny of vessel certification and bridge clearance protocols.
