DOJ Cracks Down on Container Price-Fixing Cartel

The Justice Department indicted four container manufacturers, alleging they conspired to restrict output and fix prices over four years. Singamas Container Holdings, China International Marine Containers, Shanghai Universal Logistics Equipment, and CXIC Group Containers supply nearly all the world's standard unrefrigerated shipping containers. DOJ claims prices were roughly doubled between 2019 and 2021.

All four firms are based in China or Hong Kong, giving them outsized control over global container supply. The indictment targets an industry that boomed during the pandemic as trade volumes surged, raising costs for importers and logistics operators at the worst possible time.

For buyers, the alleged price inflation during 2019-2021 likely pushed shipping expenses higher amid already-stressed supply chains. Penalties for the manufacturers could reshape pricing dynamics across global freight markets.
