A military judge ruled that confessions from Khalid Shaikh Mohammed, the alleged 9/11 mastermind, are inadmissible because they were tainted by prior CIA torture. The ruling, issued just before the 25th anniversary of the attacks, could delay the trial, which was set for June 5, 2028. Judge Colonel Michael Schrama found that Mohammed's statements to FBI agents in 2007 were not voluntary, citing an "unbroken continuation" of psychological conditioning and severe coercion from earlier CIA interrogations.

He also noted that FBI agents failed to inform Mohammed of his rights to remain silent and consult a lawyer. Prosecutors may appeal, and defense lawyer Gary Sowards praised the decision. The case involves other defendants, including Walid bin Ash and Mustafa al-Hawsawi, whose confessions are also under review.
