The Faroe Islands elected a conservative government Thursday, with voters shifting focus from geopolitical tensions to domestic economic issues. The People's Party secured 26.7% of the vote, up from 19% in 2022, as concerns about housing costs and youth exodus dominated the campaign.

This election followed months of debate over autonomy from Denmark, but momentum stalled after President Trump's renewed threats regarding Greenland. The crisis dampened enthusiasm for independence talks that had been building before the Greenland controversy. The main pro-Denmark Unionist Party also gained ground, increasing its share to 21.5%.

The center-left Social Democrats, who had won the previous election with 26.6%, saw their support drop to 18.9%. Despite the setback, they could still join a governing coalition. Economic frustrations, including unfulfilled promises like a shorter workweek and concerns about first-time homebuyers, drove the rightward shift in this North Atlantic archipelago of 55,000 residents.
