Everest Guide Survives Six Days After Companies Delay Rescue

Dawa Sherpa, a 57-year-old guide, was found alive on Mount Everest after spending six days alone on the mountain. He was discovered crawling near base camp by trash collectors, having survived on ice and chocolates while suffering frostbite. The rescue came only after his employer received pressure from local groups.

His family blames Himalayan Traverse Adventure for not launching an immediate search, filing a police report for negligence. The company claims weather conditions made rescue attempts too dangerous. Meanwhile, 8K Expeditions - which secured permits and insurance - says Himalayan Traverse was responsible for the search operation.

According to his daughter, Dawa Sherpa was hired as a cook for Camp 2 but was sent to Camp 4 instead. He became separated from fellow climbers on May 29 after running out of oxygen and later became trapped in a crevasse. In post-rescue video, he said he waved at a helicopter but was not spotted.

This incident highlights the dangerous working conditions for Sherpa guides supporting Everest expeditions, which generate significant revenue for Nepal. The finger-pointing between companies raises questions about accountability and safety protocols in commercial climbing operations.
