2035 Job Market: Nurses Up, Secretaries Down

Two forces will dominate the job market through 2035: aging and artificial intelligence. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employers will add about 5.9 million jobs over the next decade, a slower pace than the previous decade due to a shrinking labor force. The healthcare sector is expected to add more than 2.2 million jobs, driven by demand for nurses, physician assistants, home health aides, and hearing aid specialists.

While healthcare leads in raw numbers, the utilities industry will grow nearly 10 percent, fueled by data centers and AI infrastructure. Renewable energy roles, including solar and wind technicians, are set for rapid expansion. AI threatens back-office roles like bookkeepers and administrative assistants, which are held disproportionately by women, while data scientists and software developers still see strong growth.

Overall, AI-exposed occupations are projected to grow just under 2 percent, slower than the 3.5 percent overall rate. Economists caution that forecasting remains difficult amid rapid technological change, but these projections offer a comprehensive view of future labor trends.
