Yardeni Calls U.S. Economy 'Shock Resistant' Despite Headwinds

The U.S. economy has proven remarkably resilient since 2020, weathering multiple crises without falling into prolonged recession, according to analysts at Yardeni Research. In a research note, the team led by Ed Yardeni described the economy as 'shock resistant,' having survived the COVID-19 lockdown, supply chain disruptions, inflation spikes, and aggressive monetary tightening.

Despite widespread predictions of recession, the downturn triggered by pandemic lockdowns proved the shortest in U.S. history. The economy has since absorbed additional shocks including a brief banking crisis, the war in Ukraine, and President Trump's tariff agenda. Even a record-long federal government shutdown last year and tepid hiring failed to trigger significant economic contraction comparable to the 2008 financial crisis.

Recent concerns about declining savings rates threatening consumer spending appear overblown, Yardeni's team argues. They point to retiring Baby Boomers with substantial savings who can maintain spending even as labor income disappears. While risks from potential private debt market freezes are 'legitimate,' the analysts believe Federal Reserve intervention would prevent broader financial system damage. With fourth-quarter GDP growth of 1.4% and year-over-year expansion of 2.2%, the data supports their resilient economy thesis.
