Goldman Downgrades Helleniq Amid Margin Concerns

Goldman Sachs has downgraded Helleniq to Sell from Neutral, citing weakening petrochemical market conditions and estimates below consensus for 2026-2027. The investment bank predicts that refining margins will normalize in 2026 after a strong fourth quarter of 2025, when European diesel cracks averaged $28 per barrel, jet fuel cracks reached $27 per barrel, and gasoline hit $18 per barrel. During this period, Helleniq's refining benchmark margin increased by approximately 30% quarter-over-quarter to around $11 per barrel.

The downgrade reflects Goldman Sachs' expectations of lower year-over-year refining cracks for 2026, though still above mid-cycle levels for middle distillates. European refiners face challenges from reduced availability of lighter crudes, higher gas prices, and increased carbon costs, putting them at a competitive disadvantage compared to Asian and U.S. counterparts. Helleniq's 2026 capital expenditure estimate was raised to €620 million from €575 million previously, due to accelerated renewables investment and maintenance at the Aspropyrgos refinery.

Goldman Sachs' updated EBITDA estimates for Helleniq are 10% below consensus for 2026 and 2% below for 2027. Helleniq trades at a 2% 2026 estimated free cash flow yield, well below the 9% average for its broader European oils coverage. Despite acknowledging Helleniq's strong operational execution and growing renewable power operations, Goldman Sachs sees approximately 8% downside to its new 12-month price target. The bank maintained its rating and price target for Motor Oil, another Greek refiner, despite updating estimates.

This downgrade underscores the challenges facing European refiners as they navigate a shifting market landscape. Investors should watch for Helleniq's ability to adapt to these changes and its performance in the coming quarters. The broader implications for the refining sector in Europe highlight the need for strategic adjustments to remain competitive in a global market.
