FTC Expands Microsoft Antitrust Probe into Cloud, AI Markets

The Federal Trade Commission is intensifying its investigation into Microsoft's cloud computing and artificial intelligence practices, Bloomberg reported Friday. The agency has issued civil investigative demands - essentially subpoenas - to at least six companies that compete with Microsoft in business software and cloud computing.

The FTC is examining whether Microsoft makes it difficult for customers to use Windows, Office, and other products on competing cloud services. Investigators are also scrutinizing the company's bundling of AI, security, and identity software with core products like Windows and Office. The probe focuses on potential monopolistic practices in enterprise computing, cloud software, and AI offerings including Copilot.

This investigation was initiated under former FTC Chair Lina Khan during the final period of the Biden Administration and continues under Chairman Andrew Ferguson in the Trump Administration. The agency has been meeting with companies and industry groups to gather information. The investigation remains ongoing with no final decisions made, though FTC probes don't always lead to enforcement actions.
