Australia's Underage Social Media Ban Suspend 5M Accounts

Australia's eSafety Commissioner reports social media platforms have deactivated nearly 5 million accounts belonging to users under 16. This compliance data follows a groundbreaking ban on under-16 users that took effect December 10. The move, driven by new legislation, carries potential fines up to A$49.5 million for non-compliance, though children and parents aren't liable.

The number of removed accounts far exceeds pre-implementation estimates, representing more than two for every Australian aged 10 to 16. Platforms like Meta, TikTok, and YouTube began closing affected accounts ahead of the deadline. Commissioner Julie Inman Grant stated the regulatory guidance is delivering outcomes, but some underage accounts remain active, making full compliance premature.

Meta has stated it is complying while simultaneously suing the government to overturn the ban. The government has indicated it will defend the legislation. This first month's data shows platforms are taking substantial measures, but the legal battle and ongoing monitoring mean the situation remains fluid for tech companies operating in Australia.
