The US has struck a tanker, the M/T Belma, heading for Iran's oil export hub Kharg Island, marking the first time American forces have fired on a commercial vessel since reimposing a blockade on Iranian ports. US Central Command stated the tanker "ignored multiple warnings" and was disabled by Hellfire missiles after attempting to violate the blockade.

This incident is the latest in escalating clashes over the Strait of Hormuz. The US launched two recent strikes against Iran, bringing the total to nine salvos since President Donald Trump resumed air strikes. These exchanges have largely shut down the strait, impacting global oil shipments.

Trump vowed to continue strikes, stating Iran "want[s] to settle" but also that they are "nasty people." He also mentioned receiving a call about a potential meeting. The conflict has caused oil prices to surge, with Brent crude rising significantly. Trump expressed confidence in defeating Iran soon and predicted oil prices would drop once the situation settles.

US forces also turned away two other commercial ships during the blockade's first 24 hours. Admiral Brad Cooper noted Iran's attacks on seven commercial ships in the initial week of renewed hostilities.
