US expands strikes deeper into Iran, shuts Hormuz

US Central Command launched new strikes at 2 pm ET Thursday to “further degrade Iran’s military capabilities,” hitting two bridges in Bandar Khamir, a railway, an airport and fuel storage. At least seven people were killed and nine injured, Iranian state TV reported.

The attacks broke a month‑old ceasefire that had reopened the Strait of Hormuz to oil traffic. While recent hits were mostly on the southern coast, deeper infrastructure strikes signal a possible escalation. The White House blamed Iran for violating the memorandum of understanding and said talks continue; Tehran warned that all regional infrastructure now becomes a legitimate target, and power outages hit Bandar Abbas.

The US also tightened its naval blockade, boarding a vessel and firing on a tanker bound for Kharg Island — the first strike on a commercial ship since the blockade resumed. The strait, which carries about a fifth of global oil, is largely shut. Iran retaliated with drones against a US base in Bahrain. Brent crude settled at $84.23 a barrel, over 10 % higher than a week ago.
