US strikes Iran after Strait of Hormuz closure

The United States launched its third wave of strikes against Iran on Saturday after the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps hit the Cyprus‑flagged container ship M/V GFS Galaxy and declared the Strait of Hormuz closed to all traffic.

Centcom said the IRGC fired a warning shot that struck the vessel 9 nautical miles east of Oman, leaving one crew member missing, a fire aboard, and significant damage to the engine room. In response, U.S. forces struck more than 160 targets across southern Iran, a campaign ordered by Donald Trump.

The strikes follow a 60‑day ceasefire memorandum signed last month that Iran agreed to honor by reopening the waterway. Senior U.S. officials now demand a public Iranian pledge to halt all attacks on commercial ships and to keep every channel in the strait open and toll‑free. Iranian officials blame an “errant part of their system” for the latest aggression, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted “Iran made a poor choice. Now they pay.”

The strait carries roughly 20 % of global oil and gas shipments; its closure forces tankers to reroute near Oman, raising freight costs and risking a price spike. Markets are watching whether the renewed diplomatic push can restore free passage or whether further escalation will tighten supply.
