NATO Allies Demand US Troop Cut Clarity

Estonia has pressed the US to coordinate troop reductions in Europe more closely with NATO allies, warning that ad announcements could weaken the alliance's deterrence against Russia. Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna emphasized Europe needs to know planned changes in advance as US military moves in Germany and Poland have created uncertainty. European capitals will demand clarity from Marco Rubio at a NATO ministers' meeting in Helsingborg.

Recent US military decisions have alarmed European officials: the Pentagon cancelled a planned deployment of 4,000 troops to Poland, cut 5,000 from Germany, and dropped plans to send a battalion with Tomahawk cruise missiles to Europe. These moves come amid delays to a Trump administration "defense posture review" that would outline which withdrawals would occur and when. European militaries lack similar ground-launched missiles with 1,600km range.

European nations committed to taking on more defense responsibilities require concrete plans to prioritize capabilities like air defense and intelligence-gathering. Estonia awaits clarification on delayed weapons systems including Himars missiles, with Tallinn potentially seeking alternative suppliers if needed. Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur warned NATO faces a "perfect storm" that could tempt Moscow to test alliance unity, referring to political turmoil in the UK and France.
