NATO Commander Downplays Russia Threat as US Plans Military Drawdown

NATO's top US commander General Alexus G. Grynkewich stated that Russia is not looking for conflict with the alliance, despite European allies expressing concerns over Washington's planned military asset withdrawals. Speaking at the ILA Berlin Air Show, Grynkewich emphasized that Moscow understands NATO's defensive nature and its asymmetric advantages.

His comments come as the US prepares to reduce capabilities under the NATO Force Model, potentially removing an aircraft carrier strike group, submarine forces, and dozens of aircraft including F-16 and F-15E fighters. These moves align with President Trump's broader strategy to shift military resources toward Asia and the western hemisphere, following announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany.

The assessment directly contradicts growing anxiety among Baltic states that reduced US presence could weaken NATO's deterrent. Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin dismissed European security fears as fabricated provocations designed to justify increased defense spending. Grynkewich, participating in Ukraine ceasefire talks, noted that Ukrainian forces are holding their own against Russian advances, with frontlines remaining relatively stable.

For defense markets, this signals potential budget reallocation from European theater assets toward Pacific deployments. The strategic shift may impact long-term NATO procurement plans and force European allies to reconsider their own military investment priorities.
