Gulf Infrastructure Under Attack: Iran Strikes Kuwait Plant

Iran launched a missile strike on a Kuwait electricity and water desalination plant, killing one Indian national and damaging critical infrastructure. The attack marks the second confirmed strike on Gulf power and water facilities since late February, following damage to a Bahrain plant earlier this month. Kuwait's electricity ministry confirmed the strike damaged a service building at one of its facilities.

President Trump threatened to destroy Iranian electricity plants and oil wells if Tehran doesn't reach a deal soon, signaling a dangerous escalation. The conflict has expanded beyond military targets to civilian infrastructure, with Iranian strikes also damaging Emirates Global Aluminium's Abu Dhabi smelter and Bahrain's Alba aluminium facility. Desalination plants, which provide about 80% of the Gulf's drinking water, are now at risk.

The targeting of critical infrastructure could trigger a humanitarian crisis across the region's fragile economies. Former US diplomat George Farag warned that sustained attacks on desalination plants could force an exodus of the Gulf's largely foreign population. Industry sources note that strategic water reserves could sustain the region for some time, but a coordinated campaign against these facilities would create unprecedented regional instability.
