Trump Delays Iran Strikes, But Infrastructure Damage Fuels Regional Anger

President Trump postponed U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran's power plants, granting Tehran a brief respite. However, Israeli attacks have already crippled critical infrastructure, including the South Pars gas field and Tehran's fuel depots, sparking widespread popular outrage even among Iranians opposed to their government. The strikes have drawn sharp international condemnation, with the Red Cross warning the attacks risk reaching a 'point of no return' by targeting essential civilian infrastructure.

Iran is retaliating against the strikes, including an attack on a Bahraini desalination plant after its own facilities were hit. Analysts warn further escalation could be catastrophic. Esfandyar Batmanghedilij of Bourse & Bazaar noted Iran possesses nearly 500 power plants compared to Israel's 50, meaning a single strike on a major Iranian plant could trigger devastating retaliation against Gulf states and Israel. The largest Iranian plant provides only 4% of national capacity, suggesting Israel's strategy might backfire.

The attacks have achieved what Iran long sought but failed to do: convincing the populace that the campaign targets them, not just the government. This shift in perception, highlighted by Iran analyst Omid Memarian, risks deepening the conflict and regional instability, regardless of Trump's temporary halt.
