SpaceX announced Tuesday a $100 billion commitment to build Starbase Louisiana, a massive launch facility on 125,000 acres of coastal marshland near Abbeville, La. President Gwynne Shotwell and Governor Jeff Landry unveiled the project, which aims to support thousands of daily Starship flights. Landry compared the deal to the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, declaring, "Today, Louisiana will give America the stars." The facility would be SpaceX's second private launch site after Starbase in South Texas and could bring 3,000 permanent jobs, though Elon Musk claimed 10,000 jobs and over 30 flights daily.

Musk did not attend but posted on X calling it "the biggest launch site on Earth." No completion date was provided. SpaceX launched over 100 rockets this year, primarily Falcon 9, and completed its 13th Starship test last month. The fully reusable Starship is central to Musk's Mars ambitions and plans for orbital AI data centers.

SpaceX also operates from Cape Canaveral, Kennedy Space Center, and Vandenberg Space Force Base. Separately, Musk's Tesla joint venture Terafab in Texas may cost up to $119 billion.
