Giovanni Castellucci, former CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia (Aspi), was sentenced to 12 years in prison for his role in the 2018 Genoa bridge collapse that killed 43 people. The four-year trial involved 57 defendants, including Aspi executives and transport ministry officials.

Prosecutors argued that Aspi managers ignored structural safety issues. The collapse of the Morandi Bridge sparked debate about Italy's privatized road network. A new bridge, designed by Renzo Piano, was built in 15 months for €202mn.

Castellucci, who also led Atlantia (Aspi's former owner), is already serving a sentence for another fatal accident. The verdict is subject to appeal. Aspi's current CEO issued an apology, which victim families deemed insufficient.
