A Jeff Bezos-backed consortium has agreed to purchase 30% of Liverpool Football Club for over $7bn, valuing the team at a premium. The deal, led by Amit Bhatia (son-in-law of Lakshmi Mittal), involves 1892 Holdings and is backed by K5 Global’s sports fund and Saverin’s family office. Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s majority owner, retains control but will see new shareholders, including Elaine and Eduardo Saverin, join the board. This follows Liverpool’s success under Jürgen Klopp and Mohamed Salah, which boosted revenues to £700mn in 2024-25. The transaction highlights growing billionaire interest in sports assets, akin to deals at Manchester United and Chelsea. Regulatory approval is pending.

Bhatia emphasized long-term support for the club, while Fenway president Mike Gordon noted Liverpool’s strategic growth. The sale marks a return for Fenway, which bought the club in 2010 amid debts. Private equity and tech investors continue to drive sports valuations, with Bezos’ K5 Global playing a pivotal role.

Key figures like Salah and Klopp remain central to Liverpool’s appeal. The deal underscores how commercial success translates to investment interest, with tech billionaires increasingly targeting sports franchises.
