Taiwan's stock market suffered its largest single-day decline in history on Monday, with the TAIEX plummeting 2,065.87 points to close at 19,232.35, a 9.7 percent loss. The unprecedented drop was triggered by panic selling following U.S. reciprocal tariff implementation.

A record 1,702 stocks across main board and OTC markets hit the daily limit-down threshold. Key sectors including electronics, semiconductors, automobiles, shipping, textiles, and finance all declined sharply. Semiconductor giant TSMC opened at a limit-down gap and remained locked there, closing at 848 New Taiwan dollars (approximately $25.67), its first limit-down since December 2008.

Trading volume sank to 147.3 billion New Taiwan dollars, the lowest since December 2022. The market reopened after a four-day Tomb-Sweeping Day holiday to compounded pressure from global declines. Analysts warn the market hasn't bottomed, with potential forced selling ahead as tariff tensions threaten lasting damage to Taiwan's economy. The previous single-day drop record was set on August 5, 2024.
