The California Public Employees' Retirement System voted Wednesday to give CEO Marcie Frost a $1.1 million bonus and a salary bump, even as state workers fight for higher pay.

The board of the largest public pension fund in the US voted eight to two, with two abstentions, to boost Frost's bonus by 43% from last year. She will also earn the top salary allowed in the current fiscal year, with base pay increasing to $641,250, up from $601,398.

The decision comes as the pension fund's returns beat target, though it arrives amid ongoing battles over compensation for California state workers.
