Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket reached orbit from Andøya Space Center in Norway on September 5, 2026, marking the first orbital launch from Western European soil. The two-stage vehicle lifted off at 4:12 p.m. EDT after multiple delays caused by weather, maritime traffic, and technical issues including valve leaks and fluid system anomalies. During the webcast, chief engineer Nikolaos Perakis declared the mission a success, stating the rocket settled into an elliptical orbit.

Spectrum carried five cubesats and one scientific experiment on its second flight, designated "Onward and Upward," after its debut in March 2025 failed due to a vent valve anomaly. The company views the rocket, capable of delivering 2,200 pounds to low Earth orbit, as a future workhorse for small to medium satellites. Isar's Munich facility aims to produce over 30 rockets annually.

While deployment of the payloads will follow a circularization burn, today's achievement establishes Europe's independent orbital launch capability, historically dominated by Russia's Plesetsk Cosmodrome. Isar Aerospace CEO Patrick Helber emphasized the milestone validates years of engineering progress. The successful flight opens the continent to commercial small-satellite deployment independent of foreign launch services.
