The GameCube and PS2 defined the sixth console generation, sparking decades of debate over which was more powerful. Released months apart in 2000 and 2001, both systems boasted iconic libraries still beloved today. Technically, the GameCube held the advantage. It utilized a 485 MHz Gekko CPU and a custom GPU called Flipper, capable of rendering eight polygon effects layers in one pass compared to the PS2's multi-pass system. The GameCube also featured 40MB of Mo Sys RAM with lower latency, contrasting with the PS2's 32MB Rambus setup. Julian Eggebrecht of Factor 5 famously stated the GameCube's CPU surpassed the combined power of the PS2's CPU and Vector Units. However, the PS2's success stemmed from broader appeal and a DVD format, holding 4.7GB versus the GameCube's 1.5GB mini-disc. Despite its technical superiority, the GameCube sold only 21.7 million units, while the PS2 became the best-selling console of all time with 160 million units sold by 2013.

The PlayStation 2 launched in North America in October 2000, with the GameCube following in November 2001. While the PS2 used Sony's Emotion Engine with 295 MHz CPU and Vector Units, the GameCube's streamlined architecture offered easier development. Criterion's Render Ware software notably improved PS2 programming. Ultimately, the choice depended on prioritizing raw performance or market dominance, as the systems represented contrasting philosophies in sixth-generation gaming.
