QPI Embeds Images Directly in QR Codes

QR codes typically serve as simple pointers, redirecting users to online content. This creates vulnerabilities like link rot and network dependency. A new proposal from Colten Jacob, called QR-Pixel Imaging (QPI), fundamentally changes this dynamic by embedding complete raster images directly into the code's byte stream.

Instead of linking to a menu or ticket, the code becomes the file itself. QPI defines a specific data format—starting with a 'QPI' header—that standard scanners can ignore but specialized apps can decode into a visual image. It relies on existing Reed-Solomon error correction to withstand physical damage, ensuring the image remains verifiable offline.

While data capacity is limited to small graphics like logos or faces, this approach transforms a QR code into a secure, portable digital artifact. It moves the technology beyond simple web links into a new category of machine-readable physical files.
