CourseShelf Launches as Rotten Tomatoes for Online Learning

Daniel Bergholz launched CourseShelf, a community-curated platform for discovering and reviewing online courses across any subject. The spiritual successor to his 2019 open-source project TechSchool, it addresses two key limitations: expanding beyond tech topics and eliminating the need for GitHub pull requests to add content.

CourseShelf operates on the principle that learners should trust crowd-sourced reviews over platform algorithms or sponsored ads. Users can discover courses, read and write reviews, save items to a library, and create learning playlists. The platform currently supports YouTube courses and books, with plans to add Coursera, Skillshare, and Domestika.

For course creators, CourseShelf offers a verified badge for YouTube channels and analytics to track viewer engagement and review sentiment. Built with Elixir and Phoenix on the backend and React/TypeScript via Inertia.js on the frontend, the platform is currently in beta. The goal is to create a transparent, community-driven database for all forms of online education.
