WRU faces fan disconnect over regional cuts

Welsh Rugby Union bosses faced MPs in parliament over plans to cut a professional team. Chair Richard Collier-Keywood and CEO Abi Tierney defended restructuring that would reduce regions from four to three. Fans representing all four sides criticized the move, with the Welsh Affairs Select Committee warning of an immense disconnect between the union and supporters.

The WRU confirmed a new £55m financial package from HSBC and Goldman Sachs, paying off a Covid-era government loan. Collier-Keywood stated this creates a stronger economic foundation. However, he admitted the five-year plan required investment but insisted cutting a professional team wasn't a prerequisite, despite reiterating that investment in grassroots necessitated professional reductions.

Uncertainty surrounds the Ospreys, whose owners Y11 are the preferred bidder for Cardiff. Swansea council has threatened legal action, though leader Rob Stewart noted the council's £5m St Helen's redevelopment pledge is conditional on the Ospreys remaining. An EGM threat from member clubs was played down by Tierney, who maintained support despite the turmoil.
