Usyk vs Verhoeven: Massive mismatch draws Hearn's respect for Dutch challenger

Eddie Hearn called Rico Verhoeven not a normal man ahead of Saturday's world title fight against Oleksandr Usyk in Egypt. The bout at the foot of the pyramids of Giza pits boxing's most decorated heavyweight against a kickboxing legend making his first world title shot. Usyk defends his WBC belt with the IBF title also on the line, though Verhoeven cannot win either championship.

Verhoeven brings 66 kickboxing wins and a 4,000-day unbeaten streak into the ring, but his boxing resume is thin. The 37-year-old has fought just one pro boxing bout, a stoppage win over a journeyman 12 years ago. Usyk enters undefeated in 24 professional fights, Olympic gold medalist and two-time undisputed heavyweight champion. Hearn admitted the fight is an impossible mountain for anyone but a giant of a guy with Verhoeven's arms.

At the media event, Usyk wore an Egyptian-inspired white and gold outfit but gave short answers. When asked about Verhoeven's inexperience, he said he has no idea how many rounds the fight goes. Verhoeven described the ultimate achievement as outpointing one of boxing's best fighters over 12 rounds. The face-off lasted less than 90 seconds and ended with a respectful handshake. Usyk has stated he will fight two more times after this bout.
