Usyk vs Verhoeven: Unlikely Title Fight in Giza

Oleksandr Usyk, the unbeaten two-weight three-time undisputed world champion, faces Dutch kickboxing legend Rico Verhoeven in Giza, Egypt on Saturday. Verhoeven has only one professional boxing bout to his name but dominated Glory's heavyweight division as world champion from 2013 until vacating the title last year.

Despite Verhoeven's minimal boxing experience, the WBC is sanctioning the bout as a world championship contest for one of Usyk's three heavyweight belts. The IBF and WBA are permitting Usyk to take the fight without stripping him of their titles. Verhoeven has sparred elite boxers including Tyson Fury for years under boxing coach Peter Fury, though defeating the sport's premier heavyweight remains a monumental challenge.

If Usyk suffers a shock loss, Verhoeven would become an unlikely world champion. The IBF belt isn't on the line and would strip Usyk if he loses, while the WBA would review his status rather than immediately stripping him. Usyk's next mandatory WBC defense would be against Agit Kabayel, though at this career stage he can largely choose his opponents.
