Sir Chris Hoy Hopes Glasgow 2026 Will Succeed

Sir Chris Hoy, a 50‑year‑old former cycling champion, is confident that the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will be a massive success despite being scaled‑down. The Games will stage 10 sports across four venues with a budget of £150m, a fraction of the £550m spent on the 2014 Games.

Hoy recalls the 2014 Games as "incredible" and says Glasgow will deliver a "fantastic show". The event runs from 23 July to 2 August after Victoria withdrew, and features no street races or marathons. The temporarily expanded Scotstoun Stadium will hold 11,000 spectators, down from 44,000 in 2014.

A former Commonwealth gold medallist in the 1km time trial (2002) and team sprint (2006) with Craig Mac Lean and Ross Edgar, Hoy has since become a BBC pundit. He noted that watching the 1986 Games in Edinburgh sparked his career.

Hoy, who has battled stage‑four prostate cancer since 2023, says he is "doing really well" and will "make the most of today" at the Games.
