The 2026 Commonwealth Games, once in doubt after Victoria withdrew, saw Glasgow step in as host for the second time. With limited preparation, the event will be smaller, featuring only 10 sports compared to 20 in Birmingham 2022, and about 2,000 fewer athletes.

No new stadiums have been built; athletics moved from the 46,000‑seater Hampden Park to the 10,000‑seater Scotstoun Stadium. Running costs are slashed from £700‑£800 million to £160 million, creating a template for a more sustainable Games.

Katie Sadleir, chief executive of Commonwealth Sport, said the Games needed to be reset and re‑imagined. The event has secured Ahmedabad for 2030, with sport numbers expected to rise to 15‑18, while New Zealand and Nigeria show interest for 2034.

The edition faces absences of stars like Max Whitlock, Kaylee McKeown, and Keely Hodgkinson, yet athletes such as Josh Kerr and Katerina Johnson‑Thompson will compete. Para‑sport is fully integrated, with 47 medal events, and ticket sales and TV coverage—now by TNT Sports—will shape the Games' future.
