Sean Bowen wins second British jumps title amid calendar criticism

Sean Bowen claimed his second straight British jumps champion title after a dominant 2025‑26 campaign that saw him finish with 241 winners. His triumph came at Sandown, where he delivered a flawless performance to cement his place at the top of the sport. The victory marks the first time a rider has matched the record of the 2001‑02 season since the title was first awarded.

Bowen’s season tally eclipsed his nearest rival, Harry Skelton, who finished 127 winners, while his brother James came third with 105. Despite the sheer volume, the jockey slammed the racing calendar, calling it “stupid” and arguing that the lack of longer breaks forces riders to run almost every day. He highlighted a 19‑day break from July 27 to August 14.

The Welsh rider’s criticism comes after a season without a Grade One victory or a Cheltenham win, despite being a favourite in the Gold Cup on Haiti Couleurs. Bowen said quality rides are essential and that he plans to target the Cheltenham Festival next year, hoping to turn his impressive form into a headline‑making performance.

Bowen also set his sights on eclipsing AP McCoy’s 289‑winner record from 2001‑02, calling the benchmark “incredible” and expressing confidence that a dedicated start could make it attainable. With the championship secured, the 28‑year‑old now focuses on refining his skill set to claim the sport’s most coveted titles.
