England opened day one of the second Test at the Kia Oval without captain Ben Stokes and paceman Gus Atkinson, both sidelined by a nightclub investigation. Joe Root assumed the helm, making five changes and handing caps to three debutants. The hosts bowled first on a damp, green pitch and restricted New Zealand to 291-7 at stumps.

Jacob Bethell’s left‑arm spin produced two late wickets, including a spectacular catch to dismiss Tom Latham. Jofra Archer returned for a high‑velocity spell, touching 92 mph, but went wicketless in eight overs. Debutant Sonny Baker claimed his first Test wicket, removing Rachin Ravindra, and finished with figures of 2‑63.

New Zealand’s top order faltered without Kane Williamson, who retired between Tests. Devon Conway left early for family reasons, leaving the Black Caps at 107‑4. Tom Blundell rescued the innings with 51, while Glenn Phillips lingered on 49 not out, pushing the total beyond 300.

Root’s aggressive field placements and frequent consultations with vice‑captain Harry Brook kept pressure on the visitors. England’s bowlers, though inexperienced, showed promise, and the solid start positions them to challenge for the series despite the off‑field controversy. The day ended with England in a commanding position.
