Liverpool legend Ian Rush says new head coach Andoni Iraola must be given time to succeed at Anfield. The 44-year-old Spaniard signed a two-year deal in June as Arne Slot's successor and will oversee his first competitive match against Newcastle United on 23 August. Rush, the club's record goalscorer with 346 goals, says Iraola should target a trophy in his debut season but stressed the need for patience. "If you start well, that will give everyone the confidence to go on and be more successful," Rush said.

Since Iraola's appointment, Liverpool have signed centre-back Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes and Spain winger Victor Munoz. However, the squad lost experienced players including Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Ibrahima Konate. Salah, who scored 257 goals in nine years, is close to joining Trabzonspor. Rush joked his record is now safe. Injured players Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni could provide a boost when fit.

Rush also praised Wales internationals Lewis Koumas and Harry Wilson. Koumas scored in a pre-season win over Sunderland, while Wilson influenced Leeds United's comeback against Iraola's side in Chicago. Meanwhile, Rush attended the opening of the 'All You Need Is Rush' exhibit at Anfield's museum on 14 August, displaying his 16 hat-trick balls, two European Golden Boots and three FA Cup final shirts.
