The UK government has authorized UK Sport to conduct a feasibility study for hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games across multiple northern cities in the 2040s. This marks the first serious attempt to bring the Games to regions outside London, which has previously hosted in 1908, 1948, and 2012.

Previous northern bids have fallen short. Manchester's attempts for 1996 and 2000 both failed, with the latter ending in third place behind Sydney's winning campaign. The new approach aims to leverage the entire northern region rather than relying on a single city, potentially transforming how future Olympics are organized.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy MP emphasized that the North has long been overlooked despite producing world-class athletes like Keely Hodgkinson. She rejected suggestions this announcement was political distraction, stating the government is committed to scoping infrastructure needs and building public support across all northern cities.

The multi-city model follows successful precedents like Euro 2028 and the upcoming North American World Cup, demonstrating that distributed hosting can work effectively. This bid represents a genuine opportunity to showcase northern England's capabilities on the world stage.
