Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has announced £70m funding to support Bolton's ambitious bid to host the 2035 Ryder Cup. The proposal includes infrastructure improvements and a new golf course at Hulton Park, positioning Bolton to become the first English host of golf's premier team event in over three decades. Burnham emphasized the region's seriousness about landing this prestigious tournament.

Professional golfer and Ryder Cup winner Tommy Fleetwood voiced strong support for bringing "the biggest sporting event in the world" to his native north-west England. The bid faces competition from courses in Kent and Bedfordshire, with Fleetwood highlighting the economic and cultural benefits such an event would bring to the region. The 2025 Ryder Cup champion believes hosting would create lasting memories.

The announcement came as part of Greater Manchester's economic growth strategy, with Burnham detailing how the funding would improve transport links including the M61-M6 connection. The bid has encountered opposition, with actress Maxine Peake among critics who previously labeled the project a "housing project in golf clothing." Burnham countered that the golf course would preserve green space while providing community access routes.
