Nigel Martyn Eyes Dual International Status with England Over-60s Cricket

Former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn is on the verge of becoming one of England's rare dual internationals after earning selection for the Over-60s cricket team. The 59-year-old, who made 23 appearances for the Three Lions between 1994 and 2004, has been picked for the England Over-60s 'Lions' squad following trials at Loughborough University. If he plays, he would join an exclusive list of just 12 men to represent England in both sports.

The last player to achieve the feat was Arthur Milton in 1958 - seven years after his solitary football cap against Austria. Martyn's football career spanned 666 league appearances for Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Everton, retiring in 2006. He went to two World Cups (1998 and 2002) as understudy to David Seaman but never made an appearance. As a professional goalkeeper, he was forbidden from playing cricket during the football season due to the risk of breaking fingers.

Martyn got the all-clear to play cricket again in 2011 after retiring with a stress fracture on his ankle. He now plays club cricket for Scarcroft CC near Leeds and will turn 60 on 11 August - just after this year's Over-60s Cricket World Cup in Canada begins. "The competition drives you on to push the people ahead of you," he said, eyeing a future World Cup berth as a wicketkeeper.
