Belgium's Tim Merlier claimed back-to-back Tour de France stage victories on Saturday, powering to a dramatic sprint win on stage eight in Bergerac. The Soudal Quick-Step rider, 33, appeared boxed out at 500 metres but launched a ferocious long-range surge from 200 metres out to reel in the field and deny Biniam Girmay a fourth career stage win. Olav Kooij rounded out the podium.

The result moves Merlier within 15 points of Mads Pedersen in the green jersey standings, turning the sprinters' classification into a genuine two-man battle. Tadej Pogacar retained the yellow jersey after the flat 180.4km run from Perigueux, keeping his overall buffer over Jonas Vingegaard intact ahead of the mountain stages.

A three-man breakaway featuring Liam Slock animated the day before the Belgian was swallowed 1.3km from the line. Mathieu van der Poel attempted a textbook lead-out for Jasper Philipsen on the home straight, but Merlier's raw acceleration proved decisive. "I thought it was over," Merlier admitted, describing his near-miss with a crash before the final corner.

Organisers have shortened Sunday's stage nine by 30km to 155.5km due to an intense heatwave in the Correze region, a rare mid-race route alteration that could disrupt team strategies and favour aggressive racing over controlled sprint trains.
