Mauro Schmid of Jayco-Alula claimed victory in stage 13 of the Tour de France, a demanding 205.8km route from Dole to Belfort. Switzerland's Schmid and Colombia's Harold Tejada of XDS-Astana broke away on a descent with 16km remaining.

Britain's Tom Pidcock, riding for Pinarello-Q36.5, finished third on the stage, just two seconds behind the leaders. This strong performance propelled Pidcock up to fourth place in the general classification. He now trails yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogacar by four minutes and 15 seconds. Pogacar, along with second-placed Jonas Vingegaard and third-placed Remco Evenepoel, had a relatively quiet day in the peloton.

Pidcock's team manager, Doug Ryder, praised his rider's performance, calling him a "fighter" who has "turned the race upside down." While a challenge for the overall podium may be unlikely, Ryder indicated that a stage win and a strong GC result are still within reach for Pidcock, who has a history of impactful performances, including an Olympic gold medal and major one-day race victories.

Pogacar is aiming for his fifth Tour de France title, which would tie him with legends like Eddy Merckx and Jacques Anquetil. The Tour continues with high mountain stages in the third week.
