McLaren faces unprecedented 2026 F1 rule changes

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella says the world champions have faced an "unprecedented" amount of work preparing for Formula 1's massive 2026 regulation overhaul. The changes affect cars, engines, fuel, and tyres, creating what he calls the biggest design challenge of his career. The team aims to maximize development time before on-track testing.

Stella confirmed McLaren won't run its new car on the first day of pre-season testing in Barcelona next week, opting for days two or three. This delay prioritizes design refinement over early track data, a calculated risk for the reigning champions. Competitors like Cadillac, Audi, and Racing Bulls have already conducted shakedowns.

The new rules will fundamentally alter racing strategy, with energy management becoming critical. The hybrid system's electrical power now supplies roughly 50% of total output, creating variable overtaking opportunities based on battery levels. Stella warned this could make racing look "weird" as drivers manage energy deployment for attack and defense.
