McLaren will not run on the first day of Formula 1's 2026 pre-season testing in Barcelona, a deliberate move by the team. Team principal Andrea Stella confirmed the reigning world champion drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, will wait until day two or three to begin their track programme.

With the sport introducing its biggest regulation change in years, involving new power units and chassis, each team is limited to three of the five private testing days. Stella stated the plan allows maximum development time for their new car, prioritizing a competitive launch over early track data, a strategy also adopted by Ferrari.

The decision underscores McLaren's confidence in their development schedule. After the Barcelona shakedown, official tests follow in Bahrain before the season starts in Australia. The team is seeking a third straight Constructors' Championship and believes delaying their first run gives them an edge in finalizing their car's configuration.
