McIlroy Says Players Championship Should Not Become Fifth Major

Rory McIlroy has dismissed calls for the Players Championship to become men's golf's fifth major, despite its prestige and strong field. The Northern Irish star, who has won the tournament twice and completed the career Grand Slam with his 2025 Masters victory, believes the Players already has a strong identity without the major label.

McIlroy argues that the Players Championship, held annually at TPC Sawgrass in March, stands on its own merits and doesn't need the designation. He points to the women's game, which already has five majors, as an example of why expanding the men's schedule isn't necessary. The 36-year-old also criticized the current timing of the US PGA Championship, suggesting it should return to its traditional August slot to regain its identity as 'glory's last shot.'

While acknowledging the Players Championship's status as one of golf's premier events, McIlroy maintains that the sport's four traditional majors - the Masters, US Open, Open Championship, and US PGA Championship - should remain unchanged. His comments come as the tournament launches its 2025 promotional campaign with the tagline 'March is going to be major,' highlighting the ongoing debate about the event's status in professional golf.
