England's Olympic cycling silver medalist Matt Richardson has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games due to injury, removing a compelling narrative from the event. Richardson, 27, controversially switched his allegiance to England after winning two silvers for Australia at the 2024 Paris Olympics, citing greater support in Britain.

Richardson was a strong medal contender for the team sprint, keirin, and sprint events. He had achieved significant success since his switch, including two silver medals at the 2025 Track Cycling World Championships and European sprint and keirin titles. He sustained his injury during a crash at a World Series keirin event in Japan.

He will be replaced by Harry Radford, who will make his Commonwealth Games debut in the sprint events. The withdrawal means Richardson will not face his former Australian teammates, one of whom, Leigh Hoffman, expressed a desire for Richardson to be beaten.
