Jon Armstrong's WRC Debut: From eSports to Monte Carlo

After an 18-year journey, Northern Irish driver Jon Armstrong will make his World Rally Championship debut this season with M-Sport. His path to the top tier wasn't straightforward; a financial halt in 2017 led him to eSports, where he became virtual world champion in 2018. That success provided a springboard back into real rallying, culminating in a strong 2025 ERC campaign.

Armstrong's sustained success, backed by the Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy, earned him a full 14-rally season in a Ford Puma Rally1. He describes the opportunity as an unbelievable Christmas present. His teammate will be fellow Irishman Josh McErlean, creating a supportive yet competitive environment for both rookies. Armstrong acknowledges the challenge ahead, calling his Monte Carlo debut a "baptism of fire."

Choosing race number #95, Armstrong pays homage to his partner Hollie's father, the late Colin McRae, who won his title in 1995. This personal connection adds motivation as he enters the sport's biggest circus. His goal for 2026 is realistic: show solid progress, secure good stage times, and demonstrate he belongs at the highest level, building a foundation for future years.
